What are the components of the differential?

2024-10-17

Differential is a key component in the car drive system, which is responsible for distributing the power of the engine to the left and right drive wheels. The composition of the differential mainly includes the following parts:

1. Housing: The external container of the differential, usually made of cast iron or aluminum alloy, is used to hold the internal gear assembly.

2. Main reduction gear: located at the front of the differential, it is responsible for transferring the power of the engine to the next gear assembly inside the differential.

3. Differential gear: This is the core part of the differential, usually composed of two or four gears. These gears have a different number of teeth in order to achieve different rotational speeds when the car turns. The rotation direction of the differential gear is opposite to the rotation direction of the input and output shafts.

4. Bearing: used to support the rotating motion of the internal gear of the differential to ensure its smooth operation. Bearings usually consist of rolling bearings or plain bearings.

5. Locking mechanism: In some differentials, a locking mechanism may also be included to lock the differential into a rigid connection when needed, thereby improving the vehicle's traction and stability. For example, when the car is driving on ice, the locking mechanism can prevent the left and right wheels from rotating at different speeds, thereby improving the vehicle's control.

In short, the differential is a complex mechanical device responsible for distributing the power of the engine to the left and right drive wheels of the car and achieving different RPMS when turning.
